In a unique twist on traditional library practices, Kansas City artist Heidi Pitre has found a creative outlet in transforming library checkout cards into miniature masterpieces. With a decade of experience, she has crafted over 160 pen-and-ink illustrations, each inspired by books and their authors. These vintage cards, once used for borrowing books, now serve as a canvas for her artistic expression. Pitre's journey began during a 2015 art residency in Navasota, Texas, where she discovered the remnants of the past in the library's book pockets. Her collection grew as she sourced cards from classic titles, each adorned with typewritten author names, book titles, and library patron signatures in elegant cursive. Pitre's artistic process involves adding symbolic elements, playful references, and personal touches to each card, making them unique and relatable. Despite the small size, she treats each card as a precious, one-time opportunity, as the material is difficult to replace. However, her supply is limited, as libraries gradually shred or discard these cards over time. The exhibition 'Permanent Record' showcases her work, offering a glimpse into the evolution of library practices and the enduring connection between readers and their books.
