Ghana Court Overturns KNUST VC's Decision: Professor Wins Appeal (2026)

The Court of Appeal in Kumasi has quashed a directive by the Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), ruling that the decision to order a professor to apologise breached natural justice rules. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, had constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate a petition against the professor, Prof. Rexford Assasie Oppong, for alleged harassment and insubordination. The committee's findings, which were upheld by the Vice-Chancellor, led to the directive for the professor to apologise to his colleagues. However, the Court of Appeal found that the order to apologise amounted to a disciplinary sanction imposed without following the university's due process and disciplinary procedures, thus quashing the directive.
